Image by Getty Images via @daylifeYeah after such a lot of fuss it happened, the opening ceremony of commonwealth games in Delhi yesterday. The rains, the delayed work, allegations had all caught a lot of the so called media attention. But the opening ceremony makes me to think if it was the other way around- media attention for delaying the work!!Even I was telling my friends that I couldn't see any work going on myself. And it was a fantastic opening ceremony. Leaving myths aside..Wonder what Commonwealth is and I'm sure more than half a billion Indians are ignorant of what this games are about.Commonwealth is an association of 54 countries that work together towards shared goals in democracy and development. All but 2 of these countries were part of the Great British Empire or the countries that got freedom from British Empire or rather gained independence from! British monarch is the head of the commonwealth and presently Queen Elizabeth is the head. And notably this post is not hierarchical. There is a secretary general who represents the commonwealth publicly and for the management and governance of the commonwealth. The current secretary is an Indian. They have various activities and games are one of the prominent event held every 4 years by one of the member country. And only during the games we common people come to know that there is a commonwealth and yes India gets a lot of gold in these games unlike the Olympics where China, US and Russia participate. Events like Aquatics, Archery,Lawn ball, Net ball, etc.. are held.
This is the first time such an event is held in India and lot of us expect India to lead the games.
